On February 13th, a group of students and staff from the University of Amsterdam under the name "Nieuwe Universiteit" occupied the Bungehuis in order to democratize the university. They have made six demands (www.newuni.nl/eisen/), but the Board of Directors (CvB) has refused to engage in dialogue with them. Instead, the board sued four randomly singled-out students, called for immediate eviction and asked for a 100.000 Euro fine per student per day occupying the building. Unfortunately, the occupiers lost the court case, are now at risk of being evicted and required to pay a 1000 Euro fine per day that they remain in the building.

Loosing the court case does not make the action less legitimate. On the contrary, it demonstrates the Board of Directors' refusal to take the concerns of their own students and staff serious and their willingness to run the university in an autocratic manner. Even though the occupiers are under constant threat of eviction evicted, they continue to organize lectures and workshops to make sure education can continue.

They are grateful for any form of donation, not just monetary. The amounts listed in the "perks'' section are a random choice. This fund raising goes to lever the costs made for the occupation of the Bungehuis and the organization of the ongoing activities that follow the eviction.

As welcome as you were to take a visit at the Bungehuis for any support, even more welcome you are now to give your support to the ongoing struggle for a democratic university and a critical society . The occcupation and eviction of the Bungehuis has maybe come to a close, the struggle has not: it will go on with an even louder and stronger voice, now many see the need to stand up against the breakdown of the UvA and to support this cause!
